but no yeah lets have the conversation:
"the CEO doesnt want to run that kind of website"
Excuse, shouldnt have bought the 'go nuts show nuts whatever' website if thats the case. APPEAL DENIED
"we have to follow the TOS of the appstores we're hosted on"
Excuse item one, no you dont, item two, you have since those days implimented infrastructure that would allow pornography and sex work on this platform Without violating TOS of any applicable app store. APPEAL DENIED
"we own the site we get to make the rules"
Incorrect, this site has only ever made profit when the users willed it. we collectively own the site as a hive mind and no legal change in ownership will change that. APPEAL DENIED
"we have to keep this website safe for the children who use it"
Argument based on fallacy banning pornography and sex workers does not prevent pornography and sex work from occuring on the site, it only forces aforementioned users to hide and avoid labling their content appropriately, which REDUCES the safety for children and sex workers alike instead of increasing it, this has been shown to the point that making this argument at all is tantamount to admiting fascist intent APPEAL DENIED
Reblog it. I want this to be on Tumblr radar by end of the week, i want my notes to be useless from the discourse, i want every single person on Tumblr to have seen this post at some point
While I agree with some points you make there, mostly the one about "you now have built the infrastructure" one (Yup, yup, we have), let me point out something that doesn't help the entire argument:
Well. I don't know how to break this to you, but .. this site hasn't ever done any profit. Nor a single day of its 16 years. Seriously, never, ever, ever. It has been losing money, millions per month, for over a decade and a half. So appealing to "do what the community says it or lose money" is kind of weak: the community has zero power over tumblr making a profit or not, sadly.
(also, just pointing out, the CEO didn't buy the "go nuts show nuts" site, he bought the "huge porn ban site")
That being said? I agree with you, I don't see any reason to not allow showing "things going into things" now you have the tools to properly tag it as adult content, etc etc.
Nope, tumblr is making revenue through those means. Not profit.
I don't want to sound patronizing but there may be people around that genuinely don't know those terms:
- Revenue is when you make money out of something.
- Profit is when the revenue is higher than what it cost to run the business. AKA when the amount of money you are getting paid is bigger than the money you have to pay to others.
If your profit is positive, you are making money. If it's negative, you are losing money, even if people are paying for your products and services.
It's not in my hand to share actual numbers, of course, but for the merch and upgrades sales to cover the costs of running Tumblr entirely, they would need to be at least two orders of magnitude bigger. You would be surprised. I wish we published the numbers.
And of course, you may think I'm just lying. But the very CEO talked about this issue in an interview somewhere not so long ago. And you know, CEOs don't lie about their companies not doing good, if they lie it's going to be on the opposite direction: at the end of the day, an important part of their job may end being to convince investors to put money to keep the machine running, and lying about the company not doing good is not going to precisely help with that
Some numbers from our COO, or to put that in [tumblr] terms, don’t make me tap the sign:
the money that users pay to us, and what we make from advertising, goes directly to the costs of Tumblr (including salaries and server costs, but not limited to that), but it costs Automattic a lot more than we bring in to cover the gap (again to the tune of 10s of millions). Automattic can't do that forever.
Also, I really wish folks would get off the ridiculous idea that using Community Labels somehow gets you suspended. It’s literally the opposite.
Community Labels allow you to post mature content, like nudity, erotica, sexually suggestive material, and gore, because they hide the content from underage users. Repeatedly failing to use Community Labels when appropriate is what reduces safety for underage users and thus gets you suspended.
